Julia Salter
In my work I have evolved a personal visual language and vocabulary in terms of mark making, colour and composition. My prints are the end result of experimentation and exploration: challenging the boundaries of monoprinting by printing and reprinting from stencils and plates to build up layers. Nothing is left unused. Plates are passed through the press several times and stencils turned and replaced – the final prints breathing a history of experience.
My interest is in the delicate structures, planes of vision, surface texture and spatial depth and with the exploration of juxtapositions and tensions that evolve out of the means of production. The resulting lyrical rhythm of the grids and lines hints at an urban existence that is set against the delicate, organic, fern-like feathering of the ink.
