I make contemporary prints exploring the notion of time and landscape through a contemplative exploration of surface. I am captivated by ancient semi-natural landscapes typical of my native southwest Cornwall, where it is not possible to say where nature stops and human activity begins. Recent works of the Fens where I now live resonate with the scents and sounds of fragile landscapes threatened by climate change. I try to capture and communicate a clear and honest moment of contemplation both through working en plein air and by expressing landscape filtered through memory, inspiring the content of my work from the openly descriptive through to extreme abstraction.
My plates are predominantly carborundum, a medium which allows freedom to work on a large scale in the same way as approaching a painting. Carborundum provides highly embossed rich textures which create prints that pervert the traditional picture plane to produce something almost three dimensional. I currently exhibit at Cambridge Contemporary Art.
